What happens during Refugee Week?

Refugee Week 2010 takes place 14 - 20 June and there are going to be hundreds of events taking place across the UK.

Take a look at some of the diverse events near you.

Refugee Week is asking people to join the Simple Acts Campaign

The Simple Acts campaign is about inspiring people to use small, everyday actions to change perceptions of refugees.

It consists of 20 actions that can be done by anyone and that encourage us to learn and do more with refugees. With every person who joins the campaign and does a small thing with and for refugees, we get a little closer to removing barriers between communities and to creating the kind of world we all want to live in.

We believe that by encouraging lots of people to do these simple, seemingly insignificant acts – read a book, tell a story or share a dish – we can begin to make lasting changes to the world around us.

It sounds simple - and it is!

"Receiving refugees is not the matter of somebody signing papers in some remote office. It’s the matter of making friends with new neighbours; it’s the matter of turning strangers into a part of community and that’s done most just by treating them normally, as part of a fabric of the life of this country, this community."

"I think people feel it’s part of what it means to be British to offer sanctuary to those who are being persecuted, tortured, subject to violence, fleeing conflict, fleeing famine. I think we are a tolerant and open-hearted nation and I feel that the best way to express that is to say to those who are really suffering if you got no other options left, we will offer you sanctuary."
