Publicity

Tell everyone you know about your event, including your friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Use notice-boards in community centres, doctors’ surgeries, libraries, shops, schools, churches and your place of work (although make sure that you ask first, and don’t forget that fly-posting is illegal!). Remember to encourage everyone who is involved in organising the event to promote it through their own networks, newsletters and meetings they attend.

Try and think as broadly as possible for where you may be able to get publicity for your event. You may also want to organise adverts in the local press or faith magazines - it all depends on the size of your event – but remember effective publicity is vital in ensuring your event is a success.

Make sure you take advantage of a range of promotional material which the Refugee Week Team has produced including posters, balloons, banners and t-shirts for you to promote your event, see the Promote your Event section for more details. You may also want to produce your own publicity materials, but please remember to include the Refugee Week logo, which is available as a download from the website.

Think about inviting VIPs to your event (such as government officials, well-known community figures and celebrities) if appropriate, and if so ensure they are mentioned on any publicity, which will encourage others to attend.

Most importantly, remember to enter your event on the Events Calendar on the Refugee Week website, as this is the main place that people check when looking for events to attend in their area.

After the event

Even when the event has come and gone, make sure you let everyone know how much of a success it was. For example, can there be a review in the local newspaper about the event? At the very least make sure you let the local media know how the event went and how many people attended and (if appropriate) how much money was raised.

Make sure you thank everyone involved. Can you get a commitment from them now, while they’re still buzzing with pride, for Refugee Week next year?
