Refugee Week Conference 2008

Speaker at Refugee Week Conference 2006

A free one-day conference for anyone involved with Refugee Week

10.00am - 4.30pm

Friday 21 November 2008

Amnesty International, 17-25 New Inn Yard, London, EC2A 3EA

As part of the development of Refugee Week throughout the UK we are committed to providing a forum where those involved in events this year can share their experiences with others.

The day includes four workshops of which participants are invited to attend two. Workshop descriptions are as follows:

Workshop descriptions

1. Promoting small actions in education settings

This workshop will identify strategies for promoting and facilitating small actions by young people, staff and parents in education settings. By sharing their experiences, participants will identify resources and structures to support this work as well as examples of successful approaches to working within education settings.

2. Small Actions through New Media

This workshop looks at how you can use non-traditional means to promote your activities concentrating on social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace as well as discussing what kind of audiences and events work best in this environment. The workshop will be led by Barbara Keating the Online and Information Manager at the Refugee Council.

3. Implementing Small Actions

With so many small actions to choose from, the prospect of implementing the campaign may feel overwhelming to many organisations, whatever their size. By putting participants in the shoes of a selection of organisations such as RCO’s and faith groups, this workshop will look at what groups can do to implement the small actions locally. Participants will be asked to consider issues such as mobilising and inspiring existing audiences, building new audiences and partnerships, and practicalities such as time and money, and develop an action plan for a variety of organisations.

4. Using Small Actions to Develop Audiences

This workshop will focus on developing audiences for Refugee Week events. What are the challenges and successes of audience development? How can Small Actions be used to develop a new audience? Each participant will be encouraged to create a personalised audience development action plan for 2009.

(Please note that workshops 3 and 4, although addressing different aspects of Refugee Week and the Small Actions campaign, will have some crossover in subject matter. In this respect it may be worth attending either 3 or 4 but not both)
