Refuge in Fims festival 2009

Refuge in Films Festival 09

19-21 of June at the BFI Southbank

For the third year running, Nueva Generation and RefugeeYouth present The Refuge in Films festival at the BFI Southbank. Refuge in Films 09 is dedicated to raising awareness about refugee and migrant issues. In 2009, the festival is being entirely developed by a group of young people. By giving a voice to young refugees, the festival will address issues of representation of refugees and migrants in the film industry and will be a space of celebration, contributing to a more tolerant society.

Refuge in films 09 also includes a Film Challenge in which young people produced short films about immigration and refuge in collaboration with professional filmmakers and Grain Media.In addition RefugeeYouth will be launching “Becoming a Londoner” a new book written by young people, about their own experiences on making London their new home. Dance and music performances will create a night in which young people form different communities in London will get together to share and celebrate their diversity.

Shappi Khorshandi holds a night of stand up comedy workshops

Refugee Week at the Sherman theatre

15 - 21 June at the Sherman theatre, Cardiff.

The Sherman theatre are dedicating their programme to Refugee Week and are hosting a variety of events throughout the week. Included in the programme are two poetry workshops and recitals with Benjamin Zephaniah, a comedy night with top comedienne Shappi Khorshandi (which includes a comedy workshop) and a Welsh ‘HAKA’ by Earthfall Dance ltd teaching refugees and asylum seekers.

The Noisettes headlines at last year's Celebrating Sanctuary festival

14 June 2009, 2 - 7pm, at Bernie Spain Gardens, Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 ADMISSION FREE

This totally unique annual event which celebrates the art of refugee communities in the UK reaches double digits with an outrageous profusion of new talent across its three stages. Hosted by DJ Ritu from BBC London 94.9 FM, this year’s Celebrating Sanctuary features the wild Serbian Roma Indie Rockers KAL, prejudice-busting UK female Hip-Hop act Poetic Pilgrimage and Book Slam, London’s most cerebrally sexy club night, featuring cutting-edge literature and acoustic music presented by award-winning novelist Patrick Neate.

Celebrating Sanctuary gathers together musicians, dancers and artists who have arrived here from all corners of the globe and gives us a snapshot of our culture evolving. It also showcases the talent of the future with its many young dance troupes and the singing pupils from Charles Dickens School (the local primary) who join forces with Bosnian singer Tea Hodzic and her trio. There will also be a multitude of stalls selling mouth-watering dishes and drinks from all over the world, a dedicated dance stage, workshops/activities for children,information stalls in the Festival marketplace and a chance to join the Simple Acts campaign to help remove prejudice against refugees.

Last year’s highlights included Indie rockers Noisettes tearing up the main stage so come and see year next year’s hottest acts for free at Celebrating Sanctuary 2009 and help celebrate the 10th birthday of one of London’s most happening annual events which over the last decade has seen over 500 artists on their stages, including the likes of Eliza Carthy, Brian Eno, Oi Va Voi, Maryam Mursal and Stella Chiweshe.

Digital Stories: Shahrazad Letters to Europe

Sunday 14 – Sunday 20 June at The Curve, Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, Norwich


Come and hear what young people in Norfolk have to say about the future of our country, of Europe, and the way we live together. Their stories reflect their hopes for the future of Europe, their views on European identity, their ideas about Europe as a home and place of belonging, and what they think about Europe as an entity that supports those that seek sanctuary from human rights abuses.

The Digital Stories were made by young people from Sprowston High, Costessey Junior, Wymondham High and Notredame High as part of the Shahrazad Letters to Europe project. They will be shown alongside those created by young people in five other Cities of Refuge: Stockholm, Barcelona, Brussels, Frankfurt, and Stavanger. This is a Shahrazad event supported by the EU culture programme.

‘Where am I From?'

Throughout Refugee Week there will be a museum trail at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. The trail will provide visitors the opportunity to find out some interesting facts about how different countries have influenced modern British culture. Visitors can explore the collection and may be surprised about the origin of some of our favourite objects!

Susan Haire Purple from the Ghosts Exhibition

GHOSTS: Artists Deface Each Others’ Work

12 – 25 June at the Cello Factory, 33,-34,Cornwall Road, Waterloo, SE1 8TJ

Four artists, a composer and a film maker have defaced each others’ work in GHOSTS, a show inspired by Rauschenberg’s celebrated erasure of a De Kooning drawing, (1953). This challenge to the sanctity of art will be at London’s new visual arts venue, The Cello Factory, Waterloo from 12 – 25 June, 2009.

Susan Haire, Mark Dickens, Francesca Simon, Gillian Cutbill and Bernard Mordan, will be joined by New York composer, Stephen Dydo for the exhibition. Haire’s and Simon’s ghostly images will reveal traces of each others’ work as will those of Dickens (recently joined Waterhouse and Dodd) and Cutbill.

The prize winning artists have pieces in many corporate and private collections and show and perform regularly in international venues. This is their first collaboration.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue and a cd of Bernard Mordan’s film and Stephen Dydo’s music. The Refugee Council will be participating in workshops in the exhibition to mark Refugee Week.

Running the Sahara

Launch of 'Running the Sahara 2010'

June 12 at the Carevanserai, 334B Ladbroke Grove, W10 5AS

Join in on the multimedia extravaganza launch of "Running the Sahara" 2010. This international sports event, held in the Algerian Sahara, organizes runs of 5km,10km, ahalf marathon and afull marathon (for the truly hardy!), in aid of theSaharawi refugees.Sandblast, as the official facilitator for 2010, aims to recruit over 100 enthusiastic participants from the UK.

The evening will include a photo exhibition of Running the Sahara 2009 with testimonies from participants; rolling films showcasing the work of Sandblast and different aspects of Saharawi culture; a showcase of handicrafts made by the refugee women; a traditional Saharawi Tea Ceremony and the UK Premiere of scenes from the first British-Saharawi play, On the Other Side of the Wall.

The Refugee Council are hosting a mini football tournament to celebrate Refugee Week and the Simple Acts campaign. The event will comprise of four five-a-side teams, a refugee team, an MP team, a team from The Guardian and a team from Sky Sports. The tournament will take place from 10am. There will be a small medal ceremony at the end of the final match presented by Jonathan Ellis, Director of Policy at the Refugee Council.

A truly distinct experience with performances across a wide range of art forms including music, dance, theatre, comedy, poetry and Iranian, Eritrean, East and Central African fashion shows.

Enjoy the diverse nature of the North East through the eclectic fusion of performances from around the globe including the rhythms and vibes of Congolese Rumba, the soulful sounds of the Middle East and the energetic beats of the Roma.

For all you sport enthusiasts there will be a variety of sporting activities to participate in including football, basketball, cricket and a great deal more.

A whole area dedicated to children provides a range of participatory activities from clay workshops, recycled junk instruments workshops to face painting.

And if that is not enough there will be opportunities to experience different cultures by taste and smell through cookery demonstrations of traditional meals from around the world, and a range of stalls to browse through.
