This was a day of entertainment and information to celebrate the start of Refugee Week 2009. There was a fusion of talented musicians and performers, drumming up noise for Refugee Week, a big street jam to celebrate the positive contributions refugees bring to the rich tapestry of Leicester.
Health, Well Being and Fun Day
This was an information sharing and participation event, all with delicious food thrown in!
Meet and Eat with Leicester City of Sanctuary
This was an invitation for those with personal experience of the asylum system to get involved in helping build a culture of hospitality for asylum seekers and refugees. It was a chance to meet current committee members and share a meal.

Soroptomist International Leicester Coffee Morning
Soroptomist International Leicester held a coffee morning in aid of Leicester City of Sanctuary and the Golden Giver Challenge. There was a sale of homemade cakes, plants and vegetables.
Someplace: Readings From Around the World
Central Lending Library hosted an evening of readings. Specially invited guests read extracts from their favourite books from around the world, exploring the theme of place and identity.

Someplace: A Creative Writing Workshop
De Montfort University
For Refugee Week, De Montfort University teamed up with Leicester Libraries for a writing workshop to explore the idea of place. Every story takes place someplace, and this workshop explored stories relating to the places we inhabit in whether in our dreams and memories, or in our everyday experiences.
Asylum Dialogues
THis excellent drama looked at What happens when someone who has fled their country to seek refuge in the UK becomes your friend and needs your help? It explored everyday encounters between asylum seekers and British people, encouraging us to challenge our own preconceptions.
International Football Tournament

Once again this event proved to be a popular day out for the whole family with over 20 teams.
Refugee Drumming Solstice
Newarke Houses Museum and Gardens
This event celebrated Refugee Day and the end of the week’s activities across the city. It featured African Dancers (Liberia & Congo), a huge drumming workshop led by a Ghanaian master drummer and music from local artists, including jazz songstress Mellow Baku. There was international cuisine and an array of world drums to play.
