NORTH OF ENGLAND REFUGEE SERVICE
NORTH EAST STRATEGIC MIGRATION PARTNERSHIP
REFUGEE WEEK CONFERENCE
18th June 2008, Gosforth Civic Hall
INTEGRATED SOCIETY AND CITIZENSHIP
Supporting new communities into citizenship
The North of England Refugee Service and the North East Strategic Migration Partnership would like to invite you to a dynamic and exciting conference debate in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The conference marks a significant debate about the nature of migration and multiculturalism in communities in the North-East. Assessing the old multiculturalist agenda by focusing on the grassroots integration work pioneered by NERS in the region the conference attempts to rethink the relationship between new communities and citizenship in a dynamic exchange of views between practitioners and policymakers from the statutory, voluntary and refugee sectors. It will look at the following;
- The collapse of the multiculturalist consensus and the future of integrated North-East society.
- The emergence of new communities that seek to define their own British identities and contribute to a new debate on the concept of Britishness.
- How the debate on multiculturalism, using existing and future projects can be ‘mainstreamed’ through proactive partnership working.
The conference will take place at Gosforth Civic Hall. Registration will be from 9.30 and the day will finish with entertainment and performances at 4.30 pm. The cost for the day is £25 for statutory organisations, £10 for voluntary organisations, and free to refugee community organisations.
