Refugee Week Update - August 2008

Welcome to the Refugee Week update for August. This months update introduces our new Refugee Information Centre and highlights opportunities for free media training and the chance to win $100’000!

 

New and improved Refugee Information Centre launched

The Refugee Week website now includes an improved information centre containing everything you’d want to know about refugees. The Info Centre includes a diverse range information about refugees including:

  • A selection of downloadable myth busting packs
  • Case studies and interviews
  • Famous refugees - from Sigmund Freud to M.I.A
  • Loads of educational and online resources
  • An archive of Film, Music and Literature relevent to refugees

We will be constantly updating the Info Centre with resources and information relevant to refugees and we welcome your ideas and suggestions of what you’d like to see in this section. You can let is know by emailing us at info@refugeeweek.org.uk

Calling all artists promoting human rights!

The ArtVenture Freedom to Create Prize has been launched to recognise artists who use their talents to promote creative freedom, empathy, understanding and to confront discrimination and oppression. This unique and significant creative award carries a US$ 100,000 prize divided between three categories - the main prize, a youth prize and a prize to recognise imprisoned artists.

Submissions for the prize close on 31 October, 2008

Entries will be judged on:

1. The artist’s use of the arts to highlight oppression within a human rights context

2. The message inherent in the piece or body of work

3. The nature of the oppression suffered by the artist/s and which is featured in the artwork/s

4. How the piece and the message was disseminated to the public

5. The nature of the impact of the art work in the broader community

6. The timing of the art work’s dissemination by reference to events at the time

7. The personal risk incurred by the entrant/s in creating and/or disseminating the artwork

8. How the successful entrant will use each component of the prize money allocated to them

9. What advocacy group the successful entrant nominates to further the cause the art work has highlighted, what its primary objective is, how successful it is in achieving its aims, and the specific campaign the prize monies will be directed towards

How to Liaise with the Media - Free Media Training Workshop

The New Writing Partnership have organised a free Media Training workshop for:

1) Refugees and Asylum Seekers

2) Individuals from local organisations working with Asylum Seekers and Refugees

Organised as part of the City of Refuge Community programme, and delivered by the Exiled Journalists Network, this day long workshop aims to develop a positive media strategy by supporting local organisations and individuals interested in creating a stronger link with the media, it focuses on how to use media in advocacy and lobbying process, how to attract media attention and how to present the issues in the media and to connect the priorities with wider issues the media. The training will be delivered by the Exiled Journalists Network.

The workshop will cover the following: How the media operate; media strategy and policy; conducting radio interviews; the phone in; handling hostile questions; press releases – how to write them; selling your story; going on TV; making complaints.

Date: 10th of December 2008.

Evaluation of Refugee Week 2008

We’ve been working on an evaluation of Refugee Week 2008 for the last coupe of months. The report will be an evaluation of the scale and impact of Refugee Week across the UK, its successes and challenges and introductions to the central team’s future work.

We plan to publish the evaluation report in early September.
