October - Invite a refugee for tea

SA tea

It’s getting chilly out there, isn’t it? Winter is well and truly on its way and we thought this is the perfect time to invite a refugee for tea. Amazing how a simple cuppa can make you feel all warm and safe. You could even run a little tea party. Ask all your neighbours ‘round and get to know them, too. Or if your children go to school, ask the school if they want to host a tea party. This way, your children will get the chance to learn more about the lives people led before they came to this country, what they left behind and why.

You might think, that’s all very nice but where do I find a refugee to invite? It’s easier than you think. In schools you don’t have to look far. There will be classmates with a refugee background and their parents might love to come in and talk about their journeys. There are several different ways to get in touch with refugees in your local area.

For everyone, who wants to make an extra effort, why not try to bake some scones? How much more English and inviting could you be? Tuck in and enjoy!

And oh, don’t forget to make it count! Please register your tea do here.

Ingredients

·225g/8oz self raising flour

·pinch of salt

·55g/2oz butter

·25g/1oz caster sugar

·150ml/5fl oz milk

Preparation method

1.Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Lightly grease a baking sheet.

2.Mix together the flour and salt and rub in the butter.

3.Stir in the sugar and then the milk to get a soft dough.

4.Turn on to a floured work surface and knead very lightly. Pat out to a round 2cm/¾in thick. Use a 5cm/2in cutter to stamp out rounds and place on a baking sheet. Lightly knead together the rest of the dough and stamp out more scones to use it all up.

5.Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk. Bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden.

6.Cool on a wire rack and serve with butter and good jam and maybe some clotted cream.

7. Eat and enjoy with friends!
