May – Find out who you REALLY are

Find out who you really are

It is one thing to be aware of the many influences we can find in our society today.

Our restaurants, theatres, cinemas, museums and music venues would be completely different places without them. Also, we think the world is speaking English. But actually, the English we are speaking today is a product of the world’s influence on us. So, what about you and me? Who are we and what made us who we are? Have you ever thought about this special family tradition you value so much and where it came from?

This Simple Act is one of our favourites (you’re right, they all are in a way). Finding out who you really are can be just a thought or a sophisticated project. You can be serious about it or just have a little fun. Either way you’ll find out new things about you, which can be very exciting.

Fancy a little inspiration?

Why don’t you check out www.wdytya.com to get inspired by celebrities digging a little deeper to understand their roots. This websites gives you lots of links and resources to start your own search.

What about a family tree?

FAMILY TREE

It’s exciting to get your hands on old church records in order to find facts about your forefathers and their ancestors. But realistically, you would have to be very serious about this to make such an effort. It’s all online these days and so much easier and quicker for you to do. You could simply start by checking your name on www.genereunited.co.uk. Or go to www.ancestor.com or www.genetree.com to build your family tree. On some of these pages you can link into very old archive of information. Spooky!

Who do we think we are?

There is one website we really like. www.wdwtwa.org.uk has a very playful approach to finding out more about your personal history and its influence on you and the world around you. For instance, have you ever thought of Britishness, and what it means to you? There are also interactive games for schools and online activities to make you think about identity and diversity. Check it out and let us know about it.

As a little reminder: we know many more people do simple acts than we would ever know. We don’t want to share your personal findings with the world but we do want to know if our Simple Act of the month has inspired you to find out more about yourself. Please always register your Simple Acts.
