13. Have tea with a refugee

Like Belgium chocolate, free time and lazy Sunday mornings, having a cup of tea and a good conversation is one of life's luxuries.

Have tea with a refugee

And it's funny how tea has the ability to make us feel cozy, safe and relaxed. Is it because it warms up the mug so it's nice to hold it? Or, because it provides us with a great excuse to eat some guilt-free biscuits?

Either way, it would be nice to share some of that luxury with a refugee; to invite them into your life and have a little glimpse of theirs as well. They have some great stories to tell (and if they’ve recently done their UK Citizenship test, they can probably teach you a few things about Britishness.)

You might think, that all sounds nice and well but where can I find a refugee to share tea and biscuits with?

Well you could always sign up to one of the buddy schemes below. If you like their stories, you could invite some of them to give a talk at your school or work. And drink lots of tea, of course.

Read our simple step-by-step guide to having tea with refugees!

This was wonderfull !!! I have been workinf with refugees and ASR for the last 6 months. During this time I have gained great opportiunity to meet people from various cultures, make friendship and interact on a global level. We were all born equal, we have the same sky above and the same earth below.

Welsh Refugee Council ran an Arabian style café to highlight the plight of Iraqi refugees living in Wales. To be honest with you at the beginning I was rather sceptical of this particular simple act. I (and some others) thought it was a little patronising towards refugees to put them on 'display' so to speak for people to come and drink tea with, but it has worked really well! Over the course of the week 271 people completed the 'have a cup of tea with a refugee' simple act with some comments from visitors including:

"What a lovely place, you should do more of this kind of thing because unfortunately some people need to know the truth."

"I wasn't expecting to come into this café and learn so much, thank you for the opportunity to meet people from a different culture."

"Shame its only here for a week, you should make it really mobile and convert a bus into a café and take it on the road spreading the word about what people go through."
