Brentside High is a large school in West London and our students range from 11-19. For Refugee Week 2011, the 6th form held hugely popular cake sales every morning and we managed to raise a fantastic £700! This money will be go to the Horn of Africa, to help the most needy families in the 'biggest refugee camp in the world’. We also held Middle - East and Indian dance performances for year groups, and the dancers were also a great success when they performed at Gifford Primary as part of their own International Day! Throughout the week, assemblies were held on refugee issues and the whole week's Citizenship lessons focused on refugee awareness. We also held a RW jingle competition and interviewed students on the week's events - this lively session is now on our new Brentside Buzz radio station. We have a video of the dancers and cake sale on our school news website: http://www.brentsidehighschool.info/bbcblog/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=19

My fantastic class took part in a lesson about opinions and facts about refugees. We played 'against all odds' on our laptops, we shared ideas about how a refugee may feel to be pushed out of their own country and then maybe not be accepted in their new country. We considered what might make a refugee feel happy and we studied the simple acts animation. 8E showed empathy and decided they would make sure they would put anybody 'right' who gave negative opinions instead of facts about the plight of refugees. 8E designed a poster and we made a class banner to show our feelings on how we would help and support refugees. What a wonderful group of adults my class will make one day!

At Highbury Fields Secondary School, a class of year 8's gathered together in their citizenship class and formed a banner for refugee week. This banner included many information about Refugees including: poems written by students about refugees and putting themselves into their shoes, recipes from other country's, world's famous refugees that had no choice but to flee to another country, languages from around the world, facts about refugees and many other more interesting and fun things too. All of this information was typed up on computers of even written by hand from other students, printed out with colour and images and all papers were glued down onto a long strip of coloured paper. Others also drew umberellas sheltering over refugees and people, which were cut out from magazines. Umberellas were the main item on the banner, as umberellas symbolise refugees needing shelter and protection. This was a great opportunity for all of the students, including me as this was a time we all got together and understood the importance of refugees and how they seek for asylum by doing many interesting and fun activities. The banner looked amazing at the end!
