10. Visit a Refugee Week event

Take a look at this simple formula: You + your friend + a Refugee Week event = A new perspective on refugees!

Visit a Refugee Week event

Every year during Refugee Week hundreds of events take place all across the UK. Large or small, there are events happening near you which celebrate the music, art, literature, food, fashion, dance and ideas that refugees bring to the UK.

What better way to get to know the refugees in your local community than by taking a friend along to an information day / BBQ / coffee morning / exhibition / football match / conference / film showing / dance off / music festival / cookery class....whatever your taste there will be something for you to discover!

You might even get to know your neighbours.

What's Refugee Week?

Refugee Week is a UK wide programme of cultural and educational events which celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and aims to encourage better understanding between communities.

Loads of stuff goes on all across the UK - large and small - from dances, dinners and coffee mornings; sporting activities such as football tournaments and sports days; arts events such as concerts, exhibitions and festivals; events in schools or seminars and discussions around relevant issues.

I want to tell you the story of Mehdi and his experience as a refugee, which he shared with us yesterday during An Iranian Celebration for Refugee Week Scotland. Apologizing for his English he reminded us that as a recent study found that the English national football coach Fabio Capello only needs 100 words to train his team! A professional footballer in Iran, Mehdi had to flee his country. Since arriving in Glasgow, where he still waiting for a decision regarding his status, he has done the best he can to help the local community by acquiring a Certificate in Coaching in far too many sports to be listed here (football, rugby, tennis and many more) and has since then volunteered for the Scottish Football Association where he works with children and disabled people. This is a touching story which reminded me of the unspoken contributions that refugees make to the countries they live in!

I went to 19 Princelet Street today to watch the Suitcase and Sanctuary exhibition. This house on edge of the City of London tells the history of migration over 3 centuries from a childen's perspective. This historic building itself with a synagogue in the middle is impressive but what I found most amazing were the repeating patterns of prejudice and man made difficulties for people who come to start their lives in a new country. From the beginnings of Huguenot movement, the 'flood' of Irish farmers, Jewish refugees before WWII, Caribbean immigrant to the newcomers of today. It is the same misery, the same fight and the same glorious success story. And yet, London would not be London without all of these influences. This house is full of evidence for fantastic contributions throughout the centuries. I learned today that the Bank of England was founded by a Huguenot refugee. You have the chance to see 19 Princelet Street on Saturday and Sunday this Refugee Week. Check the Events calendar for details.

Yesterday I spent a full & engaging afternoon at the Harrow Arts Centre in north-west London with members of RefugeeYouth & Mustaqbal Productions, who put together a series of short film screenings, discussion groups, dance and creative writing sessions, all in preparation for this weekend's launch of Refuge in Films at the BFI.
RefugeeYouth is a vibrant and inspiring community of young people, mostly refugees, who produce innovative and positive ways of looking at refugee experiences and identity, through projects like Refuge in Films and their creative campaign 'Becoming a Londoner, now a published book.
RefugeeYouth is also about young people taking leadership, supporting and challenging policymakers through research and practice to 'break down isolation and combating alienation and despair among young refugees, creating opportunities for their development'.
But there's more...the explosion of energy, imagination and hope translates into dance, poetry, art and film - exploring representations of refugees in & through the media has never been so much fun! So, thank you Sameer, Hassan, Muna, Peter and all the other young people I met yesterday - your commitment and optimism make London a better and happier place to live in!

Watched A Few Words For Home at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow last night. This was the story of Henry & Ingrid, two Jewish refugees who fled from Germany during WWII. They met & married in Britain and started their own catering company in Glasgow, where they introduced 'crudités' to the city for the first time!

Last week I went to 12 Refugee Week events, these included the Refugee Week launch event at Norwich City Council, an evening of poetry readings of work by exiled writers (Salem Zenia, Easterine Kire Iralu and Faraj Bayrakdar whose work Mirrors of Absence I love), I visited two digital story exhibitions In Other People's Shoes and Letters to Europe which over 3746 people came to see, I went to several human library events (and was a book for two of these - sharing my father's story), I also went to a wonderful a talk about a relationship of support reflecting the kindness of strangers towards refugees and asylum seekers and finally, enjoyed the very positive and welcoming atmosphere at the community cuisines event.
I love everything about Refugee Week, what it stands for and the possibilities to make a difference through the opportunities created for different groups in the community to engage with eachother in a variety of different settings.

I went to Staying – Dream, Bin, Soft Stud and Other Stories, a series of dramatised monologes from asylum seekers who have been persecuted for their sexuality. It was a spoken word event held in the dark at the Free Word centre. Participants had taken on dramatic personas to discuss their feelings of distress, not only from their experiences in their home countries, but also the degradation of the asylum system and how it deals with LGBT asylum seekers. It was a really powerful piece, with many of the audience having no previous idea of how the system has traumatised people. An interesting event in a novel format!

As part of a group of volunteers on a programme called Global Xchange, I, and 17 team mates from the UK and the Philippines, attended a fantastic Refugee Council Celebration Event at Hounslow Manor School. The festival celebrated the refugee community of the UK; its culture, variety, opportunities for learning and most importantly, the people it brings to our nation. The event featured food from around the world, Kurdish traditional dance, Tamil traditional dance, an Iranian comic, a Bosnian singer, an Iranian pianist and composer, Nepalese dancing, Indian dancing and Filipino song from our team. I was honoured to have been invited to such a warm and positive sharing of food, friendship and culture.
